GALLERY & REVIEW | Victor Ray by Jaz Wilkins - Brisbane 2025

London based singer-songwriter Victor Ray recently made his debut across three Australian cities with his I AM. tour. Coming from humble beginnings, Victor started out his career by busking on the streets of London, like many other musicians from around the world. Victor’s unique knack for story-telling and unapologetic honesty quickly made him stand out amongst the crowd, writing music based on his first love, heartbreak, and personal family history. Victor’s music and personality resonated with multiple millions of people around the world, assisting him in his rise to fame and resulting in his gain of over 150 million streams across all platforms, over a million Spotify streams, and leading to collaborations with artists from Teddy Swims to John Legend. I wish to express a huge thank you to Frontier Touring and MG Live for organising my photo and review pass to this event.

April 5th was a cool, clear night with a hint of crispness in the air. Fans excitedly lined up outside of The Triffid, an old commercial war hangar that was once used in World War 2 nestled in the heart of the city. Blending its history with a unique and vibrant beer garden, it creates a diverse space for the local community and concert goers alike. The doors swung open at 8pm on the dot with fans flooding into the venue, not before grabbing a few beverages for themselves and friends they were in attendance with. Voices echoed throughout the bustling venue while waiting for Victor to enter onto the stage. As 10pm rolled around, the house lights in the venue dimmed and Victor entered from side stage, causing an eruption of applause that bounced off of the walls of the venue. As Victor stepped into the spotlight, he exuded a quiet confidence that commanded the attention of his audience before bursting into the first song of the night. The song itself was a slow burn with just Victor and his guitarist on stage, building up the tension in the room with his soulful, textured vocals that left the audience in awe of the performer.

Each song that followed in Victor’s set showcased a deeper insight into the musical world of Victor Ray. Wearing his heart on his sleeve while performing multiple heart-aching hits from Comfortable to i tried, filling in the gaps between songs with unscripted, raw moments of explanation and backstories to his songs, sharing multiple stories that touch on topics of the growth from experience loss and the resilience that comes from these experiences within his life. His impactful honestly, a running theme throughout his discography, shone through into his live performances immaculately, making for a show that felt both polished yet deeply human. The lighting itself was intimate, not changing often from the cool blue and purple tones, occasionally switching over to a warm, soft red light that would encapsulate his body depending on the song that was up next on the set list. Victor connected with his audience beautifully, as the venue was small and intimate enough for him to have small talks with his fans in between songs and truly feel the love from his fans that reside halfway across the world, which I imagine must have been an extremely surreal and unforgettable experience for the singer.

As Victor continued to play hit after hit from his varied discography, the final notes eventually rang out and finished with him taking a humble bow before walking off to the side of the stage. The audience was left buzzing and applause erupted, feeling less like a final send-off and more like a thank you from the absolutely wonderful live experience and performance Victor had graced the crowd with. His debut Brisbane gig was a beautiful blend of storytelling, connection, and a deep rooted love for his fans and supporters who were in attendance. The I AM. tour invited audiences to not only listen, but to feel, and based on the reaction of the audience, they were definitely listening.
